Lisa German is the latest addition to the Wallop Recordings roster and very pleased they are to have her onboard too. With a DJ reputation second to none and increasing confidence in the studio, Lisa looks all set to take 2004 by storm. In fact, DJ magazine recently tipped her as one of their 'shooting stars' to watch out for.
Lisa gained her first clubbing experiences in Manchester listening to DJs like Tim Lennox and becoming intoxicated with the vibe of acid house. A move to London soon followed where her discovery of FF at Turnmills and then Trade spurred her into getting her own decks. Her first opportunity to play out came in the Test Lounge at Trade and she ended up covering for Pete Wardman in the main room where her chunky, percussive sound fitted in perfectly.
Her next big break came in October 1999 when DTPM moved to Fabric. Promoter Lee Freeman gave her a guest slot and Lisa ended up becoming a resident in Room 2. Home followed where she opened for Steve Lawler at Deep South and it was here she got to play alongside the likes of Danny Tenaglia. In fact, he liked her set so much that he asked her to warm-up for him at the 2000 opening and closing Sunday night parties at Space in Ibiza.
A residency at Gatecrasher in Sheffield came next playing four-hour sets of tribal, techy beats in the second room. She's still with Gatecrasher and also played for them when they set up shop at Heaven in London. There's been plenty of overseas action too: Centro in Singapore, Club Q in Zurich and trips to Paris, Moscow, Romania and Peru. Back in London you can still find Lisa at DTPM every Sunday, as well as Beyond, the new Sunday morning-after party. Dates at The Gallery and Renaissance are also scheduled for 2004.
Ever the perfectionist, Lisa is currently working with Wallop in-house engineer Steve Routrax and has several tracks ready to go including her forthcoming single on Wallop, 'Let It Go', featuring vocals by Lazy Gee. There'll be further releases on Wallop, including collaborations with Lee Morrison as Dirty Northern Scoundrels, and more writing sessions with Gee. Expect to hear some breakbeat and electro-oriented material under the Bloody Mary moniker too.
'I like music that's phat and dirty with strong basslines,' she says. 'But it also has to have some soul to it, some depth and emotion. I like music that's passionate and sexy. If there's no passion in a track I don't see the point in dancing to it! I also love being in the studio – it's very taxing on the brain. Production is about creativity – it's about what's inside you.'
